Birthday Cakes

I have great memories of my sisters and I looking through the Women's Weekly Birthday Cake cookbook and deciding which cake we wanted for our birthdays. This wasn't just done in the weeks before the actual birthdate... it was done many times throughout the year. And Mum did an amazing job of creating exactly what we wanted...

So when it came time to think about cakes for my babies' 1st birthday, I wanted to continue the tradition. Because they are not able to tell me what they want yet, we tried to imagine what they'd choose if they could. They have lots of toys but each have a favourite that they take to bed each night.... Horse and Bug...

So the decision was made.

This is Amelie's Horse Cake...

And this is Elliot's Bug cake...

I liked the idea of using the little hard toys so they'll have something to keep from their first birthday cakes.

I wonder what they'll choose next year.....???

what fabulous cakes. I painstakiningly made my oldest daughter an Amy (from Bananas in Pj's)cake for her first birthday. Now at 14 she'd rather a bought cake, so enjoy the special cakes (and memories) while you can!

I can't wait to make lovely cakes like this! How sad am I, my baby is only 6 months old and I am already flicking through the Womans Day book my mum had for us, wondering what I will make for Cohens first birthday!? :)
You have done a fantastic job!

Awww! So much cuteness! So much cake! Yummo :-) Did you make them yourself? Because they are sensational!!

P.S. I'm soooo in love with Bug. If Elliot ever wakes up without him, you know where to look.

soo cute and very thoughtful to have a keepsake. it's so true though, it's not just about the cake on the day, it's the build up to it, the ideas and the excitement of how to put it all together.
i'm now tossing up many favourite thing ideas for a cake in august.
happy bday to them both :)

I remember those WW cookbooks too! I always wanted the swimming pool filled with jelly.
These look great and it was a lovely idea to link them to their favourite toys.
One more great thing about twins, there's never any shortage of cake at their party!

We had the same book... and I do remember having a piano cake, too!My mum was super-creative with cake sculpture (didn't reallyneed the book) and my efforts as birthday cake maker for my little pet are pretty feeble.

Good on you for carrying on the tradition!!

Wow you are so creative!! I could never do anything like that. My dad's birthday was last week and I baked him a red velvet cake using this recipe http://www.howcast.com/videos/139827-How-To-Make-Red-Velvet-Cake it was delicious but not as pretty as yours.
